A fragrant trip down Memory Lane
Today I received the sweetest gift
from back East
a stem of lilacs
weary from the 2,500 mile trip
looking sad and wilted.
Several stems of Lilly of The Valley
were included but did not make it,
although a few stems had tiny roots
...so in a glass of water they go
with a wish ****
that some magic will take place.
Now do not be deceived by looks
of the lilacs..
because the heavenly,
sweet fragrance...
remains.
Every second I can today
I close my eyes and take a deep breath in
and I am back in Connecticut
walking barefoot on the cool grass
after dinner is finished
and just before dark..
towards the row of lilac bushes...
while the robins call to each other
in that 'end of day' way that they do..
and I am gathering armfuls
of light and dark purple
to bring inside...
to perfume the house
.....and our lives.

Hi Rella, Lilacs and Lily of the valley are two of my favorite smells of spring. Mine has not bloomed yet. I am sorry that they did not make it. But I am sure they still smell sweet. Did you see Princess Kate's flowers, they were Lily of the valley, so beautiful, they had to be shipped in, probably from the US. Have a wonderful week Rella. Hugs, Terri
So touching, Rella. Thank you so much by your very reassuring note on my blog. I just pray that that is the case.
So grateful for your help!
Suz
I can almost smell the lilacs. That is one of the most beautiful scents.
Enjoy your trip!
Oh Rella, I am right there with you gathering those lilacs! I have similar dreams and remembrances that the smell of lilac returns to me!
There is something so otherworldly about the smell of Lilacs, Lilly of the Valley and Violets. To me, they are precious gifts of the Earth.
Hugs,
Terri
Rella, how poetically lovely! I was with you there in my mind's eye.
When I was a young girl growing up in New Jersey there were Lily of the Valleys in everyone's yard growing wild. Taken for granted then, I do wish now I could experience them.
I do hope your rooted stems take pleasure in new growth.
Have a lovely day,
Marianne xo
Hi Rella,
I forgot to tell you that I think the shaking is very significant. My dogs do it when they are tring to tell me something, I swear!!!
Hugs,
Suz
